BackOIKOS: Next Steps
Oikos is the ancient Greek equivalent of house or family. But it could also mean your friends and co-workers, or anyone in your immediate circle of influence.
Identify 8 to 10 people in your oikos that are not connected to Jesus. The first steps to their salvation could be your prayers for them.
Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
—Matthew 9:37-38 (HCSB)
Middle Tennessee Initiative, Oikos, and Your Neighborhood
Part of reaching Middle Tennessee for Christ is loving your neighbor as Christ commanded in Mark 12:31 “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The idea is simply to get to know your neighbors, serve and bless them, and be aware of opportunities to share the gospel in a natural, relational way.
As you develop a heart and passion to love, bless and serve your neighbors, you will discover there are other Christ-followers in your neighborhood with the same passion. Grouping together for a common mission brings support, accountability and encouragement. How do you find other Christ-followers or church members in your neighborhood so you can start a group? The best way may be to open your home for a neighborhood gathering.
Want to open your home?
Try hosting a Neighborhood Gathering. A Neighborhood Gathering is the opportunity for believers in your neighborhood to meet each other, have fun, and talk about ways to serve and minister to your neighbors. We can help you determine who lives near you and assist in planning a gathering in your home, a clubhouse, or a common area in your neighborhood. For more information about Neighborhood Gatherings, contact Jay Fennell (Adult Minister-Groups) at email@example.com.
